Privacy Policy
Rihla — Effective date: September 11, 2026
Overview
Rihla is a daily Islamic companion — prayer times, a Qibla compass, the morning and evening remembrances, a prayer record, and curated daily readings. This policy explains what Rihla stores, where it is kept, and what we deliberately do not do.
The short version: we receive nothing about you. There is no account, no analytics of ours, and no server of ours that your data reaches. Everything the app remembers is stored on your own device.
There is one exception, and it is stated plainly rather than buried: the free version of Rihla shows a single advert, and the advertising network behind it does receive information about your device. Premium removes the advert and that exception with it. The section on advertising below says exactly what is involved.
What we do not collect
- Rihla has no account system. There is nothing to sign up for and nothing to sign in to.
- Rihla contains no analytics or crash-reporting SDKs. We do not measure how you use the app, and we could not if we wanted to.
- Rihla has no backend. The app makes no network requests to any server operated by us, because none exists.
- We never receive your location, your reflections, your prayer record or your streak — so we could not sell them if we wanted to.
Advertising in the free version
Rihla's free tier shows one banner advert, at the bottom of the Today and Settings screens. It is served by Google AdMob.
- What AdMob receives. To serve an advert, Google receives your device's advertising identifier and technical information about the device and the request — the kind of information any advertising network needs. This is governed by Google's own policy, not by us, and we never see it ourselves.
- What it never receives. Your location is not passed to AdMob. Neither are your reflections, your prayer record, your streak, your settings, or anything else the app stores. Those never leave your device at all.
- Your choice. In the UK and the EEA you are asked to consent before any advert is requested, and you can reopen that choice at any time in Settings → Adverts → Advert privacy choices. If you decline, no advert is requested.
- Where adverts never appear. There is no advert beside the tasbih counter, the morning and evening adhkar, or the qada ledger, and none that covers the screen. Adverts are limited to a banner on two screens.
- Premium removes them entirely — and with them, this whole section. A paying user is never asked for advertising consent, because no advert is ever requested for them.
Aside from advertising, the only network connection Rihla makes is to Google Play, to handle the optional Premium purchase described below.
Location
Rihla asks for your location so it can work out prayer times, the Qibla bearing and the Hijri date. The calculation runs entirely on your device using an offline astronomical library. Your coordinates are used in that calculation and then discarded. They are never transmitted anywhere.
If you save a place by name so you can see the times for somewhere else, its coordinates are stored on your device alongside the name you chose, and nowhere else.
What is stored on your device
The following is kept in the app's private storage on your phone. It is not backed up to us, it is not synced between devices, and it is removed when you uninstall the app:
- Your prayer record — which prayers you marked as prayed, made up or missed.
- Your written reflections, with the date and the question each one answered.
- Your streak, and which of the day's tasks you have ticked off.
- Your settings: calculation method, madhab, time adjustments, reminder choices, your call-to-prayer sound choice and saved places.
- Whether Premium is active on this device — a yes or no, and the date it was last confirmed with Google Play.
Your reflections are the most personal thing the app holds. They never leave your phone.
Premium and payments
Rihla offers an optional paid tier. Prayer times, the Qibla compass and reminders are never part of it — those stay free permanently.
- Payment is handled entirely by Google Play Billing. Rihla never sees or stores your card, billing address, or any payment detail. Those go to Google, under Google's privacy policy, exactly as they would for any other Play purchase.
- There is no third-party subscription or receipt service — no RevenueCat, no analytics on purchases, nothing in between. This was a deliberate choice: such a service would receive a record of every purchase, which would contradict everything else on this page.
- Rihla asks Google Play whether this account owns Premium, and keeps that yes-or-no answer on the device so the app works offline. No account identifier is stored.
- Subscriptions renew until cancelled, which you can do at any time in Google Play. The lifetime unlock is a single payment. Refunds follow Google Play's policy; we cannot process them ourselves.
Notifications
Prayer reminders are local notifications scheduled by the app on your device. They are not push notifications, so no server is involved and no device token is registered anywhere.
You can choose to have reminders announced by the call to prayer. Both recordings ship inside the app and play from your phone; nothing is streamed or downloaded.
Children's privacy
Rihla is suitable for all ages. Since it collects no personal information from anyone, it collects none from children.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new effective date. If Rihla ever gains a feature that would change what is stored or transmitted, this page will be updated before that feature ships — as it was for the Premium tier described above.
